    Trucking on Mars

The year is 2819. The red planet has been completely terraformed and colonized as the second planet for humanity. After a shipment of the finest cheese comes from Switzerland, Earth by way of cargo ship, it must then go to its final destination on the fourth planet from the sun, and truckers are the way to do it. What will change in the industry?

    Fossil Fuel Comeback…?

Long before humans ever find themselves on Mars, Earth will have transitioned to completely renewable energy. The problem with that for Martians (humans on Mars, not the aliens) is that renewable resources that are plentiful on Earth will be harder to find. The best example of this is solar power: with the planet being much further from the sun, the amount of energy that can be gathered from it will be diminished. It is possible that fossil fuels imported from Earth may make a comeback, but another possibility is nuclear fusion being so well developed that it will not matter.

    Less Energy to Transport…

The gravity on Mars is approximately 38% of that on Earth, meaning that an 80,000 pound trailer will weigh only 30,400 pounds. This will mean less resistance on the road, easier time climbing up mountains, and more control when barreling down mountains.

…But Collisions Will Remain the Same

Kinetic energy is measured by mass, which stays the same regardless of location or the force of gravity. As such, an 80,000 pound truck traveling 60 miles per hour before colliding into a tree will cause as much damage and pain as it does on Earth.

    Different Regulations

As with rules being different in the United States when compared to Europe, Mars will likely have its own regulatory bodies to create rules that better fit Mars’ needs. Who knows, while Americans drive on the right side of the road and Europeans on the left, Martians might drive on either side depending if the sun is up or down!

    Conclusion

TopMark Funding enjoys writing about the latest and greatest news in the trucking industry, but we also sometimes like to have a bit of fun with hypotheticals such as this. Check out similar articles such as how many chargers it would take to charge every truck if they were all electric, or how much time charging an electric truck would add to crossing the country. Do not expect us to write about trucking on other planets, however: they are either made out of gas or are far too hot.
